Integrating Environmental Stewardship and Artistic Innovation: Hands-On Learning Through Botanical Paper-Making

Students in Andrea’s art class focused on creating their own homemade paper using real plant material and recycled materials in the School. Prep took place earlier this week when Lower Schoolers broke out into small groups to tear apart recycled paper, stirring it with water to create a paper “pulp.” Other students separated and prepared flowers for their botanical inclusions to add whimsy to their final creations. Lower School artists took their prepared materials and got to work pounding, blending and molding their materials onto mesh where it will dry into their final work.

This project combines flower study with unusual mediums, allowing second graders to get their hands dirty while also reinforcing the importance of the practice of stewardship, one of our Quaker tenets.
